What is Nation Building?
Nation building or rebuilding as many tribes call it, engages social, political, economic, historical and cultural development. The last century has given tribes a long list of U.S. Indian policies that ultimately still establish the federal government as the primary decision maker for tribes. Self-determination is a belief that Indian nations determine their own futures through self-governance. However, self-determination is often more of a stated phrase than a practice that is acted upon. Rebuilding our tribal nations is not simply the assertion of sovereignty, but the effective exercise of that sovereignty.
